I've operated several double-conversion superheterodyne transceivers or transmitter-receiver pairs. After single-sideband and before digital signal processing the double-superhet was the preferred design with all offered similar controls.

I operated Purdue's Collins S-Line, 32S-3 / 75S-3.

I built and operated a Heathkit SB-101 in Indiana.

I bought and operated an Icom IC-735 in Oregon.

I have several other HF radios including a single-conversion portable that sounds great and a SOC based DSP transceiver that I have yet to put on the air.

I'm attracted to the double-conversion radios because they achieved excellent performance with all analog circuits. The controls adjust these circuits in direct and easily understood ways.
